The hidden cost of "keeping an eye on the time"

Every morning you run two jobs at once: getting ready, and being your own timekeeper. Psychology has been quietly measuring the second job for decades — and it's more expensive than it looks.

The timekeeper in your head is a background process

While you shower, dress and pack, part of your mind is running a loop: What time is it? What's next? Am I still okay? Cognitive scientists call the underlying task prospective memory — holding an intention ("leave at 8:45") and executing it at the right moment. Doing that with no external cue requires self-initiated monitoring: you must spontaneously interrupt what you're doing to check the clock, over and over, and judge each time whether to act.[1] (Why time-triggered intentions are the hardest kind, and what that means for ADHD, is covered in our article on time blindness.)

That loop costs real attention. It's why you re-read the same paragraph three times before an appointment, why you can't enjoy a slow breakfast on a school-run morning — and, paradoxically, why absorbed people miss their exit time entirely: the moment something genuinely captures you, the monitoring loop silently stops running.

The science of handing it over: cognitive offloading

There's a name for the fix, and a healthy research literature behind it: cognitive offloading — using physical action and external tools to do work your brain would otherwise do. Risko and Gilbert, who defined the term in their much-cited review, describe it as action that reduces the information-processing demands of a task.[2] A 2023 review of "intention offloading" — offloading specifically applied to remembering intentions — summarizes the evidence bluntly: external reminders have a large impact on whether people actually execute what they intended.[3]

Two findings from this literature are especially relevant to your mornings:

Your working memory is a terrible alarm clock. Give the job to something that never gets absorbed in breakfast.

Why "if-then" beats "I should"

Offloading solves the remembering; a second, equally well-documented tool solves the starting. In 1999 Peter Gollwitzer introduced implementation intentions — plans of the form "if [cue], then I will [action]".[5] A meta-analysis of 94 independent tests found they improve goal attainment with a medium-to-large effect (d = .65) over merely intending the goal, across domains from health behavior to everyday tasks.[6]

The mechanism matters: an if-then plan links a specific cue to a specific action, so when the cue arrives, the action starts semi-automatically — no deliberation, no "just five more minutes" negotiation.[5] Vague goals ("I should leave earlier") have nothing to trigger them. A cue that arrives and says wrap up the shower, breakfast is next is an implementation intention delivered to you at the exact moment it applies.
